- UMT students holding 350 banner on the beach
In conjunction with International day of Climate Action (24 October 2009), a group of passionate student from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu students come together on 23 October 2009 and call for a fair and ambitious climate treaty on the coming COP 15. This event was organized by 350 UMT Student Collective Facebook Group and the objective of this event is to spread awareness that sea level is rising due to global warming. We set two tent on the shoreline of the beach and held 2 banners of 350 and 4 banners with strong message. It was a great opportunity for us to experience the suffering of climate refugee affected by coastal flood.
It was difficult to approach people to join this campaign as people think that is not practical to set tent on water. The setting up of tent was quite difficult as the wave keep pushing our tent to the shore but overall it was fun and exciting.
Water expands as it warms, so a warmer ocean means a bigger ocean. Warmer air temperatures also melt more land ice, adding to the ocean’s volume. Higher sea levels bring higher tides and bigger storm waves, washing away coastlines—choice nesting grounds for sea turtles and seabirds, breeding grounds for seals, and home to over 50% of the world’s population of people. As sea level rises, centuries old farmlands on small island nations have flooded; drinking water is contaminated; entire nations are faced with extinction. For these residents, and many of the world’s poorest individuals, there is no higher ground to run to. But the human face is only one among a sea of submerging life: ice-dependent species such as polar bears, penguins, and are rapidly losing hunting, breeding, resting, and mating grounds.
