350 Candle Vigil “The World Wants A Real Deal”

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please note that the venue of the location has changed from Padang Timur to Astaka. They aren’t far apart however, and within walking distance of each other, though LRT is the suggested transportation of choice. The landmark is the church to the left, and Amcorp Mall to the right if you’re coming in from Federal Highway from the KL side, and the Tun Hussein Onn Eye Hospital if you’re coming in from Asia Jaya.

On October 24 2009, we made history by being part of the largest ever global event in human history, the International Day of Climate Action. Hundreds of Malaysians from all walks of life rallied together and planted trees, signed petitions, wrote letters, cleaned up our beautiful natural environment, cycled, danced, marched and swam in over 20 events across the nation to support of the 350 campaign which was held all around the world. The 350 movement is a global call for a reduction of carbon emissions from its current level of 387 parts per million (ppm) to 350ppm, which scientists believe is the safe level to avoid drastic climate shifts.

The COP15 talks at Copenhagen, Denmark have already begun, and world leaders will come together to try and negotiate a fair and just climate policy, but there are plenty of roadblocks to that process. Here is where YOU can make a difference. If you missed out on the opportunity to participate on October 24, don’t fret!

The weekend of December 11 and 12 marks another 350 call for action, The Weekend of Action, with the theme “The World Wants A Real Deal”, and we Malaysians too are not going to be left out from the over 500 and counting actions held around the world.

On December 12, we will hold a candlelight vigil at Astaka (just opposite Asia Jaya LRT station, across the road and behind Tun Hussein Onn Eye Hospital) as a symbol of hope and solidarity for countries in the world that are most affected by climate change. Of course, it won’t just be ANY candle vigil, we’ll have some activities lined up for you too!

7.30PM: Registration & gathering of participants

7.45PM: Distribution of candles and safety briefing

8.00PM: Lighting of candles and beginning of vigil

8.30PM: What is 350? by Steve McCoy, founder of Green Drinks KL

8.40PM: Human/candlelight formation

9.00PM: Sing along/photo session

9.20PM: Let’s take some action and get some satisfaction!

9.25PM: Debriefing

9.30AM -End

So come one, come all and make a date with us on December 12 at 7.30pm at Astaka. Candles will be available for sale at RM1 each, though you’re most welcome to bring your own creative one! There’s no official dress code, but green is the colour of the day! YOUth made a difference on October 24, and just as Youth in Copenhagen are making waves to the COP15 talks, we too are going to make our voices heard again!  We already made history once, let’s make history again this Saturday and let our combined candles light the way for a brighter future!

P.S: Please do check out the Facebook event page here. Thank you, and hope to see you there!

P.S.S: Dear friends, if you’re driving to the event, let’s do our bit for the environment and car pool! That way, we free up more parking space, and you can all split the parking and fuel costs.
