The Malaysian Youth Climate Justice Network (MyCJN) is a movement seeking to raise awareness on climate change as it is arguably the most important issue of our generation; and enabling young Malaysians to ‘be the change they wish to see’. As change agents, we aspire to communicate to fellow young Malaysians their right to climate justice, advocate for a bold and just national climate policy, and to represent the collective Malaysian youth voice in the global climate change policy debate.

As part of the wider Global Youth Climate Justice movement, MyCJN has a specific 6 month action plan leading up to the UNFCCC COP 15 in Copenhagen this December, where the post-2012 second commitment period under the Kyoto Protocol will be negotiated by ministers and officials from 192 countries, including Malaysia.

This plan includes:

1. A number of Climate Change projects identified and planned to be implemented in the run up to COP 15 in December.

  • Party for the Planet – reaching out to youth through music
  • 350 International Day of Climate Action – emphasis on importance of 350 carbon equivalent ppm in the atmosphere
  • Letter Writing Campaign to Elected MPs – urging for a commitment from our lawmakers
  • The Great Youth Climate Survey – collecting data from Malaysian youth
  • A delegation of 7 Malaysian Youth Climate advocates to attend UNFCCC negotiations in Bangkok from 28 September to 9 October 2009

2. A delegation of 10 Malaysian Youth Climate advocates to attend COP 15 in Copenhagen as part of the Global Youth Climate Justice Network.

3. Plans beyond December 2009 will very much depend on the outcome of the negotiations at Copenhagen, and these will be formulated in early 2010.

Past Projects:

1. A series of ‘Conversations on Climate (COCs)’ (August) have already been held to raise awareness and provoke thought on specific topics related to Climate Change –

  • What is your idea of Climate Justice?
  • Climate Change and Business
  • Climate Change and Food Security
  • Alternative Energy
  • Green Technology
  • International youth climate change movements

These discussion-based forums are intended as platforms to challenge our understanding of the issues, and together, formulate a vision of a reality that reflects the hopes of a better, collective future.

2. An Environmental Sustainability Leadership Symposium (August 28-30) to empower 30 Malaysian youth by providing them with the necessary tools and skills to become independent sustainability leaders, and to establish a core of effective climate advocates who will be able to facilitate synergy and coordinate various chapters of the youth climate change network.
